The Maine Chapter of WTS is pleased to announce the recipients of its annual scholarships.  This year the chapter awarded two scholarships in the amounts of $2,500 and $1,000.

The $2,500 Scholarship was awarded to Habso Omane of Portland High School. Ms. Omane was born in a refuge camp in Kenya which housed  183,000 refugees. With a true understanding of the impacts a shortage of medical resources causes, she hopes to pursue a career in the medical field, but also plans impact on public policy and improve the healthcare system. As a female, Muslim student of color, Habso is also passionate about creating a more inclusive environment in STEM related industries.

The $1,000 scholarship is awarded to Sierra Bussell of Greenville High School. Ms. Bussell impressed our committee with her impressive ability to balance her commitment to community service and athletics while striving academically. Next year Sierra hopes to attend Maine Maritime Academy to pursue a career in Marine Transportation Operations. Her focused career goals of diversifying the marine shipping industry are very inline with the mission of WTS, making her a great fit for this award.
