Workforce Development Seminar

2/21/20

2:30-3:30 p.m.

  • Moderator: Kathy Simons, LKG-CMC
  • Amanda Daflos - Chief Innovation Officer, Office of Mayor Eric Garcetti, City of Los Angeles
  • Rossana D’Antonio – Deputy Director at County of Los Angeles County Department of Public Works
  • Lou Anne Bynum, Harbor Commission Secretary, Port of Long Beach

The Los Angeles Chapter of Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS-LA) recognizes that a workforce gap is present and growing in the transportation industry in the Los Angeles Region. Put simply, the current workforce is aging and exiting the industry, and the industry does not have enough young, talented professionals in or entering the industry – creating a serious and growing talent shortage.

In 2018, WTS-LA held its first half-day workforce development seminar in Los Angeles. Initiating an industry-wide discussion, the organization brought together major public agency leaders to share observations, information, and experience about environmental, economic, and technological trends; as well as highlight existing programs that support the development of the industry’s workforce. Stemming from that event, WTS-LA developed a white paper, entitled “Bridging LA County’s Transportation Industry Workforce Gap: Where have all of the qualified people gone…and how do we get them back?,” which examines what has led to the growing workforce gap and what is being done about the ever-growing problem.

Attend this session to learn from transportation industry leaders about the causes for the growing workforce gap, what is being done to make changes in the industry to attract and keep talent, and what still needs to be done to meet the region’s transportation needs now and for the foreseeable future. Leaders from WTS-LA will also be present to explain how this local chapter has focused its programming and resources to support bridging the workforce gap

Mindful Mentorship – Supporting Women in Transportation and Construction

2/22/20

9:30-10:30 a.m.

  • Moderator: Mahsa Pan, Port of Los Angeles
  • Ayda Safaei, Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro)
  • Abigail Flores, Los Angeles County Department of Public Works (LACDPW)
  • Hannah Brunelle, Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG)

Leaders are created through hard-work and mentorship.  WTS-LA is a stepping stone for many focused on career development, no matter the experience level. Come hear from entry-level, mid-professional, and executive-level leaders on the impact that WTS-LA and mentorship has had in their career trajectory, and learn how they have set themselves apart from their peers and overcome their challenges.
