Innovations at FHWA with Al Alonzi

Al Alonzi, Division Administrator - Federal Highway Administration

Al_Alonzi-Photo_for_Bio_jpegAl was named the FHWA Texas Division Administrator in July 2014. As a key member of the Agency leadership team, Al exercises executive direction over the $4B annual Federal-aid apportionment to the state of Texas, one of the largest and most complex Federal-aid programs in the Nation. As Division Administrator, he leads a multidisciplinary staff of 50 professionals in Austin to provide stewardship, oversight and guidance to state and local funding recipients to continuously improve mobility in Texas. He is committed to remaining a relevant partner in Texas while advancing national transportation goals.

Before this appointment, Al served as the Deputy Division Administrator for the Texas Division Office. He has been with FHWA for 29 years. Al served FHWA in multiple capacities across the United States, including FHWA Washington, DC Headquarters.

Al is a graduate of the FHWA Highway Engineer Training Program. He received a BS in Civil Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Massachusetts, and is a graduate of the AASHTO National Transportation Leadership Institute. He and his wife Susan have three children and spend most of their free time watching them in action on the soccer fields.

CAMPO: Goals, Challenges, and Future Plans - a conversation with Ashby Johnson

Ashby Johnson, Executive Director of CAMPO

Ashby_Johnson-CAMPOAshby Johnson is the Executive Director of the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) which is the metropolitan planning organization for the six-county central Texas region and has served in that capacity since August 2014.  He is also the Executive Director of the Texas Association of Metropolitan Planning Organizations.  Ashby also served as the Deputy MPO Director at the Houston-Galveston Area Council, which is the metropolitan transportation planning agency for the eight-county greater Houston region from May 2003 until July 2014.  While in Houston, Ashby worked on major projects such as the Katy Freeway Expansion, major improvements to and rehabilitation of the US 290 Corridor, the IH 69 Segment Committees, and several studies with Houston METRO to examine the feasibility of transit-oriented development near rail and park and ride bus transit stops.

Prior to H-GAC, he spent eight years with the Federal Highway Administration’s Office of Planning and one year with the Federal Transit Administration’s Office of Planning working on initiatives such as regulatory and guidance development for metropolitan and statewide planning for ISTEA and TEA-21, the transit New Starts Program, and the Metropolitan Capacity Building Program.

Prior to USDOT, Ashby spent five years with the Texas Department of Transportation in the Environmental Affairs and the Design Divisions. He holds a Bachelors degree in Government and a Masters in Community and Regional Planning from the University of Texas at Austin.

Ashby has been an active member of American Association of Metropolitan Planning Organizations (AMPO) since 1996.  He has served as a member of the AMPO Policy Committee for several years and also served as the Chair of the Policy Committee.  He was elected to the AMPO Board in January 2016.
