Over the past two decades, the term sustainability has taken on a significant meaning in all facets of society - locally, nationally, and globally. At its heart, sustainability means the ability to maintain, sustain, or endure, both now and in the future. Moving towards human sustainability involves significant considerations, including environmental, economic, and social aspects. As professionals in the transportation industry, we are primarily concerned with these considerations as they relate to transportation systems, recognizing the important impacts this infrastructure has on society.
Join the WTS: Heart of Texas Chapter for our 5th annual Professional Development Seminar on September 12, 2012 to explore the idea of sustainability, particularlysustainable transportation, and how to move on from this concept to actual planning, implementation, and evaluation. A total of 7.5 AICP Certification Maintenance credits have been applied for, of which, 1.5 include Law credits!
Jim Walker, AICP, Director of Sustainability at UT-Austin, and past Executive Director of the Central Texas Sustainability Indicators Project, will be the MC for this all-day event.
Sessions will include, but not limited to, the following:

  • Local initiatives in Austin, such as those from the City of Austin and CTRMA's Green Mobility Initiative;
  • Sustainably active transportation, including a WTS award-winning research project
  • New initiatives in sustainable freight transport and logistics
  • Next steps and research in performance measures and updates from Texas Transportation Institute and FHWA; and a
  • Law session that addresses current issues relevant to both sustainability and transportation, including updates internationally, current developments under NEPA, environmental justice cases, and the Keystone Pipeline.

Please save September 12th on your calendar for this exciting event!  Formal invitations with program and RSVP details will be sent out in the coming weeks.  For questions, please contact Jennifer Bennett-Reumuth, 512-656-7578 or JennBennett@gmail.com; or Lisa Loftus-Otway, 512-232-3072 orloftusotway@mail.utexas.edu
