Transportation YOU

Changing the Face of the Transportation Industry

Who We Are
Transportation YOU is a hands-on, interactive mentoring program that offers young girls ages 13-18 an introduction to transportation careers. Transportation professionals are creative problem-solvers developing solutions essential to human health, safety and happiness. In Chicago, we are working with partners in industry and education to offer programs and activities that connect classroom learning to real world careers.

Transportation YOU is the joint initiative of WTS international and the U.S. DOT that launched in 2010. Local chapters coordinate Transportation YOU initiatives.

Mission
Transportation YOU's mission is to shape the future of the transportation industry by growing the involvement and interest of girls and young women in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) studies.

Programs
Our Transportation YOU programs have included engineering challenges, transportation field experiences, and tours of transportation facilities.  To apply for the 2015-2016 Transportation YOU Program, CLICK HERE!

Goals
  • Educate and empower girls with regard to their opportunities in" the transportation industry
  • Link girls with role models through one on one mentorship programs
  • Provide internships and career development opportunities
  • Help girls build leadership skills and self confidence
  • Improve STEM education programs
  • Make STEM education more accessible through scholarship opportunities
  • Contribute to the diversity and creativity of our transportation workforce.

DC Youth Summit
Transportation YOU's flagship conference is a meeting of 25 girls and their mentors at the annual Youth Summit. Students who participate in Transportation YOU events will be invited to apply for a spot at this week-long summit. This is a wonderful opportunity for Transportation YOU’s participants to experience once-in-a-lifetime tours, meet-ups with White House administrators, and cool challenges and breakout sessions culminating in a spectacular reception on the last night of the program.

How to get involved

There are a number of ways to get involved with Transportation YOU as a student, educator or industry partner. If you are a student or educator interested in bringing Transportation YOU to your school, contact cfrei@wightco.com

These programs would not be possible without corporate partners. A few options for getting involved are:
  • Volunteer as a mentor to girls aged 13-18
  • Host a field tour and/or transportation Q&A for students at your office
  • Donate promotional materials
Have your own idea to promote our goals? Let us know!

Transportation YOU Events

On February 25th, Transportation YOU completed the "Find your Drive" workshop at Parsons Brinkerhoff. The “Find Your Drive” workshop is a design thinking and leadership seminar geared towards empowering high school girls to identify their unique strengths, discover their leadership style, and become leaders of social change. The workshop brought together over 20 high school students (Ages 13-18) from 12 different schools in the Chicago region.

Transportation YOU will be hosting two events in April:

  • A job shadow day on the Thursday, April 13th, which will be followed by the April program event
  • An Urban Streets tour on Saturday April 29th, in which students will be taking students to the street as they complete a self-guided tour of some of downtowns most innovative transportation projects including the Loop Link, Dearborn two-way bikelane, Chicago Riverwalk, and many more.

If you know of potentially interested participants or would like to volunteer with the Transportation YOU program, please contact Jane Wilberding at jwilberding@samschwartz.com or Robin Upchurch at robin.upchurch@hdrinc.com
