What is Girls in Transportation?

A hands on interactive day working with professionals in the field to see what engineers actually do.  Girls will learn about design and construction, smart roads, and the other aspects that go into the planning, construction, design, and maintenance of a roadway system.   The girls will get the opportunity to work with women that are in various facets of the industry, and get to learn and ask questions.

When and where is this event?

The event will be held on Tuesday October 10th.  This is a school day, so we students will need to get out of school for the day.  The event will be from 9am to 3pm (approximately).  This will be an educational day for the girls, learning how to apply STEM concepts to the transportation industry.  The event will held at the Math Science Innovation Center

Will transportation be provided?

Transportation to and from the event will be the responsibility of the attendee.  Students may also be dropped off/picked up by parents or guardians, if preferred. For schools that have three or more students attending our workshop, we encourage the school to arrange transportation to and from our event. In previous years, our attendees have carpooled with other members from their perspective schools. (If you wish to find out if other participants from your school are attending, please email centralva@wtsinternational.org).

How many students can attend?

We are looking for 40 girls to attend this awesome workshop!  More than 1 girl is welcome to apply from each school.  We will take applications on a first come first served basis.  However, if there is a significant number of applications from one school, we may try to limit the applicants from that particular school to allow for a diverse group of girls from the Central Virginia Region.  We want these girls to walk away inspired and to make new friends as well, and we have found that best occurs when there is a diverse applicant pool.

Will the school need to provide a volunteer to attend with the students?

We would like to encourage a teacher to accompany the girls from their school or district.  However, if this is not possible we do plan to have enough volunteers to help run the program for the day.  Please be aware that each volunteer needs to pass a background check prior to working with the students.

Do I need to bring my lunch?

Lunch will be provided.  Please let us know of any allergies or dietary restrictions on the application.

What is the cost?

This event is FREE thanks to our local sponsors:
