Sponsor of the Year!

In 1714, Lieutenant Governor Alexander Spotswood established Fort Germanna on the Rapidan River. The fort was inhabited by 42 German emigrants. Four short years later, Spotswood removed the fort and erected a capacious mansion on the site. Just downhill from his home, he created the town of Germanna as the county seat for newly established Spotsylvania County, which he named after himself. Germanna was the biggest town in the region for decades, disappearing from the landscape in the 1750s.

This presentation is hosted by Dovetail's very own Kerri Barile, and will discuss the history of Germanna and describe archaeological excavations to date that have uncovered portions of the mansion and fort. It will also delve into Spotswood's influence on area transportation routes--many of which are still used today.
