Review of Central Pennsylvania Engineer's Week

February 28, 2018 07:56 AM

Engineers Week was February 18-24, 2018. WTS Central PA kicked it off by hosting a “Design a Marble Rollercoaster” station at the Harsco Science Center at the Whitaker Center in Harrisburg. More than 250 children participated in the engineering activities that weekend! Their creativity and ingenuity was put on display as they problem solved and created their coasters.  All involved certainly had fun!

The celebrations continued on Tuesday, February 20 by bringing a full house to Messiah College for the Engineers Week Breakfast, followed by a career expo.  The engineering professionals had a chance to enjoy a tasty breakfast at the college, while learning all about the Collaboratory and heard about a few projects that the student teams are working on. Following the breakfast, there was a poster session for students to present their projects to the professionals, then a career expo where students networked with local engineering firms.

The culmination of Engineers Week was the banquet held at the West Shore Country Club on Wednesday February 21. During the banquet, Dr. Brock E. Barry gave a very animated presentation on Nonverbal Communication. He discussed how nonverbal communication can be used to enhance workplace communication, how to interpret nonverbal cues, and how to use verbal and nonverbal jointly to provide a coherent message. This banquet also honored three special award winners for their accomplishments and dedication to the engineering profession.  This year, Gregory J. Gromicko, P.E., was recognized with the Engineer of the Year Award and William J. Kingston, III, P.E., CFM, was recognized with the Young Engineer of the Year Award. WTS Board member, Angela M. Schreffler, PWS, CE, was awarded the John H. McCormick Educational Outreach Award for her dedication to introducing girls to STEM topics among other outreach efforts.   Congratulations to all the award winners!

And of course WTS Central PA’s favorite day of Engineers Week is Girl Day, which was on Thursday February 22.  We need everyone’s help to reach as many girls as possible to introduce them to engineering, explain how engineers are changing our world, and tell them that they can be an engineer too!  All you need to do is set up a school visit and we will help you choose an activity and donate a book to the school.  Please contact Angela Schreffler (AMSchreffler@mccormicktaylor.com) if you are interested in this opportunity - extended through March 31st!
