I-81 Interchange and Navy Way Road Extension, Pittson, PA

A $43.2 million roadway project improves mobility and safety, while increasing opportunities for economic development.

GF_1

As lead designer for this Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) project, Gannett Fleming spearheaded the effort to transform the transportation landscape of communities in northeastern Pennsylvania. Gannett Fleming’s designs called for reconstructing I-81 exit 178, improving acceleration and deceleration lanes, eliminating tight curves on ramps, correcting short weave distances between ramps, and adding decision-making time for drivers. The design team integrated three roundabouts to seamlessly usher traffic to and from the interstate.

Navy Way Road includes a one-mile extension to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport and two industrial parks. The new connection to I-81 helps spur economic development and improves safety, setting this project apart from typical roadway investments that focus mainly on improving the existing roadway conditions.

I-70 North Junction to Route 136, Washington County, PA

First-in-state Diverging Diamon Interchange

GF_2

Gannett Fleming served as the prime consultant for PennDOT on this $63.4 million I-70 reconstruction and widening project in Washington County. The Route 19 Murtland Avenue interchange now features a diverging diamond interchange (DDI) – the first of its kind in Pennsylvania. The original Route 19 interchange was a substandard cloverleaf that could not be upgraded without significant right-of-way and business impacts. On average, nearly 98,000 vehicles a day pass through this portion of I-70 and Route 19.

The DDI provided an interchange with reduced conflict points, avoided a costly dual I-70 bridge replacement over Route 19, accomplished the majority of interchange construction within the existing boundary, and minimized traffic impact during construction. In addition to the DDI, the project added travel lanes on I-70 to better handle capacity on the heavily traveled highway. The completed upgrades help PennDOT meet their safety and mobility improvement goals along the I-70 corridor.
