WTS/MassDOT Conclude Brown Bag Series Final Session on Stormwater and Water Quality Best Management Practices

May 19, 2014 02:30 PM

Article by Tory Fletcher

WTS-Boston and MassDOT University (MDU) held the final installment of its popular Brown Bag Luncheon series on environmental permitting for transportation infrastructure projects this March. The session drew another full house eager to hear about MassDOT’s various initiatives to improve the water quality of stormwater runoff from state highways.  Henry Barbaro, MassDOT’s Wetlands Program Supervisor, previewed pending revisions to MassDOT’s Stormwater Handbook, last issued in 2004. Alex Murray, MassDOT’s Stormwater Programs Coordinator, summarized the Highway Division’s successful stormwater retrofit initiative and ongoing efforts to incorporate state-of-the-science stormwater management practices into roadway improvement projects, including the use of porous pavement at park and ride facilities.

Over 250 participants attended the four WTS/MDU Brown Bag workshops, gaining greater insight into the complexity of obtaining environmental clearances for roadway and bridge project construction.

The Professional Development Committee would like to thank the following for contributing to the success of this series:  Tory Fletcher of Normandeau Associates, Inc. for program development; all the MassDOT speakers from the series who willingly gave their time to present their topics; Noreen Hazelton and Christine Bond of MDU for incorporating the series into MDU’s Engineering & Technical Institute; Kam Sylvestre and Booker T. Crawford of MassDOT for WEBEX and speaker support services; Gerard Kelleher of MassDOT and Susana Hey of the MBTA for photography; and Reggie Alexandre and his crew from DCAM for the room setup.
