WTS-Boston congratulates Tom Tinlin on being selected for the 2017 Honorable Ray LaHood Award!

Thomas J. Tinlin
Highway Administrator

A native of South Boston, Tom Tinlin came to MassDOT in January of 2014 after being the longest serving Commissioner of the Boston Transportation Department in the City's history, under the longest serving Mayor of Boston, Tom Menino.  By September 2015 he was appointed Highway Administrator by Transportation Secretary Stephanie Pollack, becoming the top Highway official in the Commonwealth.

As a former municipal leader, Tom brings this philosophy to his work in state government, paying close attention to the needs of the 351 cities and towns in the Commonwealth.  It was this approach that led to development of MassDOT’s Small Bridge Program, which funds small, municipally owned bridges that are in need of repair or preservation.  Tom has also focused on the Highway Division’s communication with all stakeholders, which has led to the successful transition from manual toll collection to the implementation of All Electronic Tolling.

Under Tinlin, the Highway Division consistently delivers over $1 billion in capital improvements each year, focused on bringing the state’s 3,000 centerline miles of pavement and 5,000 bridges into a state of good repair.

Tom holds a Master's Degree in Public Administration from Suffolk University where he remains an active alum and serves on several boards and in the mentorship program.
