Since its inception, MassDOT has embraced change and forged ahead with a number of employee engagement programs that have significantly changed the culture and work environment for MassDOT and MBTA employees.  These initiatives are vehicles that have helped to recruit and retain a talented, diverse and qualified workforce.

In 2014, MassDOT/MBTA achieved a new attitude: a “can do” customer service attitude, a welcoming attitude to diverse employees and customers, a mentoring attitude to existing employees (“Lifting while we climb”), and an attitude of commitment to promoting more women and diverse employees.

A few highlights of MassDOT/MBTA’s success include:

  • Enhancing the MassDOT University’s mentoring program, “Lifting as We Climb,” which is focused on preparing today’s workforce for tomorrow’s challenges.  150 women have signed up for the program.
  • Recruiting and hiring females in Leadership Positions:  Women are well represented at the highest levels at MassDOT and the MBTA, holding 44.6% of the Senior Official positions at MassDOT and 32.0% of the Senior Official positions at the MBTA.  In fact, from December 2012 to March 2015 two of the four Division Administrators were female.  These included Dr. Beverly A. Scott, Ph.D. who became the first female General Manager and Rail & Transit Administrator and Celia Blue who led the Registry of Motor Vehicles.
  • Founding the Women’s Employee Resource Group.
  • Implementing the Employee of the Month and Annual Performance Recognition Award Programs.
  • Hiring five (5) Women Fellows in September 2014, through the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Women’s Leadership Fellowship Program, to leverage the experience, energy, and analytical skills of Massachusetts women with graduate degrees.

MassDOT and the MBTA have been active members of WTS-Boston for more than ten years and have sponsored employees in attending WTS-Boston functions, becoming members of WTS-Boston, serving on boards and committees of WTS-Boston, and having senior leaders speak at WTS-Boston events.  These events serve as forums for MassDOT’s employees to meet, network and learn from professional women and men in the public and private sector.
