Rosa Parks Diversity Leadership Award - Laura Brelsford, Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, Assistant General Manager for System-Wide Accessibility (SWA)

Laura Brelsford is the Assistant General Manager for System-Wide Accessibility (SWA) at the MBTA. Since joining the T in 2007, Laura has been at the forefront of the T’s mission to become the nationwide model of an accessible public transportation system. This has included developing key programs aimed at driving and sustaining long-term change such as the agency’s internal access monitoring program, new trainings for both employees and customers, and system-wide barrier removal program termed the Plan for Accessible Transportation Infrastructure (PATI).

A graduate of Mount Holyoke College and former investigator with the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination (MCAD), Laura served as past chair of the Cambridge Commission for Persons with Disabilities and is currently on the board of the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center (BARCC). She is the recipient of the Marie Feltin Award for outstanding advocacy and WalkBoston’s Golden Shoe for improving access to bus stops. However, she is most proud of her role in helping ensure people with disabilities have a seat at the decision-making table—a change that continues to improve services for all.
