WTS Boston And TransportationYOU

October 31, 2014 04:08 PM

Pass on your enthusiasm for transportation careers by connecting with middle and high school students and faculty and volunteering as a mentor in the TransportationYou initiative. The WTS-Boston Outreach Committee is organizing our involvement in this program and we are eager to get as many members involved as possible.

We especially need your help in getting the students involved by connecting with educators and guidance counselors who can spread the word about the program.  Your local high school, family, and friends can be the means for identifying girls who may be interested in the program! Please help by sharing our event flyer with friends and posting it in your office to help spread the word!

What is TransportationYOU?
TransportationYOU, a joint initiative of WTS and the U.S. Department of Transportation, is a mentoring program that offers girls ages 13-18 an introduction to the wide variety of transportation careers.  It is our goal to pair each girl in the program with an adult mentor who builds a relationship, provides guidance, answers questions, and shares details about career development and challenges.

Locally, the WTS-Boston Outreach Committee will connect mentors to mentees and organize ice-breaker events to give each pair a chance to get acquainted. In addition to the mentoring program, we host a series of hands-on, transportation-related activities and events throughout the school year.

A tour of flight and train simulators at the U.S.DOT Volpe Center, followed by a “speed-mentoring” activity, has been scheduled as our first event on Tuesday, November 18th. Click on the links at the left for more information on the initiative and the upcoming event.

How Can You Help?
First and foremost, we need to find girls who are interested in attending our first event and participating in our program. You can help by spreading the word – talk to your family, friends, local middle and high schools, and tell them about Transportation YOU!

After the first event, we will be looking ahead to our formal mentoring program and need mentors. The WTS-Boston Outreach Committee has developed an Action Plan for Mentors that can be found at the link on the left. The plan includes recommended activities and talking points, which are intended to guide mentors as they begin mentoring relationships.

The Outreach Committee is happy to follow up on leads you provide us.  Please contact Ali Love at Alison.Love@stvinc.com or Katie Choe at Katie.Choe@boston.gov to get involved!
