New Year’s Reception Features Secretary Pollack and a Night of Networking

February 16, 2015 03:09 PM

By Alison Felix, MAPC

On February 5, 2015, WTS-Boston kicked off the New Year by proudly hosting its Annual New
Year’s Reception. With over  150 members and guests in attendance, there was a strong level of excitement along with extensive networking. Chapter President Rachael Sack gave opening remarks, while announcing and thanking the WTS-Boston 2015 Sponsors for their support. She also took time to welcome and recognize the many transportation leaders in attendance, before introducing newly appointed Secretary of Transportation and CEO Stephanie Pollack as the guest speaker.

Secretary Pollack provided candid insights about the importance of working with available resources while continuing to provide critical transportation services, such as access to places of work and schools. Those in attendance heard about her people-centric approach to transportation and multi-modal focus.

Secretary Pollack has been active in public policy issues affecting transportation, sustainable development and the environment in Massachusetts for many years. Prior to being appointed by Governor Baker, Secretary Pollack served as Associate Director of the Kitty & Michael Dukakis Center for Urban and Regional Policy at Northeastern University, overseeing the Center’s research agenda as well as conducting her own research projects in the areas of transportation policy, transit-oriented development, sustainability, and equitable development.

She co-chaired Governor Deval Patrick’s 2006 transition working group on transportation and served on Boston Mayor Menino’s Climate Action Leadership Committee in 2009-2010. Before coming to Northeastern University in 2004, Pollack was a senior executive and attorney at the Conservation Law Foundation, New England’s leading environmental advocacy organization.

The 2015 New Year’s Reception provided an early glimpse into the Secretary’s perspectives on transportation so soon after her appointment. WTS-Boston looks forward to hearing Secretary Pollack speak at the upcoming March Luncheon and to continuing to work with her in the months and years ahead.

Thank you to the Special Projects committee for their efforts in organizing this event.
