Members on the Move: Kate Fichter

Fichter

This summer, Katherine S. Fichter rejoined the Massachusetts Department of Transportation as the Assistant Secretary for Policy Coordination.  Ms. Fichter’s impressive career includes having served as a Project Manager for Governor Charlie Baker Special Panel Review of the MBTA after the winter 2015 shutdown of the agency.  While in this role Ms. Fichter served as lead staff person to create “Back on Track: An Action Plan to Transform the MBTA” (http://www.mass.gov/governor/docs/news/mbta-panel-report-04-08-2015.pdf). In this position, she staffed panel meetings, helped to draft the plan, managed the panel consultant, and finalized the panel recommendations.

As Assistant Secretary for Policy Coordination, Ms. Fichter works with the Secretary to establish project-selection criteria so the agency makes the best possible choices about what to build; improve the capital planning process; and review project delivery problems.  Her position cuts across different disciplines and groups making sure that all different areas coordinate in shaping policy.

Ms. Fichter holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the University of Chicago and a Master of City Planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Department of Urban Studies and Planning.  She held a Policy Analyst position on the Committee on Transportation in the Massachusetts Legislature from 1998 to 2000 and served as a Presidential Management Fellow at the Volpe Center from 2002 to 2004.  She joined the Massachusetts Department of Transportation as a Transportation Planner in 2004 and became a Manager of Long Term Planning in 2010.  From 2014 to 2015, Ms. Fichter worked as a contractor for the Volpe Center as a Community Planner where she worked on public transit investment, transportation performance management, urban freight movement, and public-private partnerships.  Congratulations to Katherine S. Fichter from WTS-Boston!
