March Madness – WTS-Maine Style

April 28, 2014 05:39 PM

By Katy Hews, WTS-Maine Chapter President

March has been a very busy month for the WTS-Maine Chapter.  As promised in the February newsletter, the scholarship committee, co-chaired by Sarah LeBlanc and Liz Brownell, completed the selection process for our first scholarship recipient.  Choosing the recipient was an incredibly hard decision, as all eight applicants were outstanding young women with strong academic records, compelling external activities, and promising futures.   We feel very privileged to have been able to reward one of these young applicants with a $2500 scholarship to pursue a STEM-related curriculum at the college of her choice.  The recipient will be announced at the WTS-Maine Annual Meeting on May 6.  The May 6 Annual Meeting is also our scholarship drive AND our membership drive.  It is through the generosity of our members and friends that we were able to offer this $2,500 scholarship after being a chapter for only two full years.  Our goal is to offer more than one scholarship in future years.

Also in March, we hosted our very first Transportation YOU event.  Transportation YOU, a joint initiative of WTS International and the U.S. Department of Transportation, is a hands-on, interactive, mentoring program that offers young girls ages 13-18 an introduction to a wide variety of transportation careers.  WTS-Maine chose the Maine Engineering Promotional Council’s (MEPC) Engineering EXPO on March 22 as our inaugural event.

Our Transportation YOU Co-Coordinators are Be Schonewald and Erin Courtney.  They led a team of eight WTS-Maine members who volunteered many hours to create activities that would satisfy the wide range of attention spans and interest levels of the young attendees.  Our bridge activity is exclusive to the WTS-Maine Chapter – created by WTS-Maine Chapter members and beta tested by one of the activity developer’s sons.  A team of eight WTS-Maine members spent several hours on St. Patrick’s Day cutting pipe cleaners, coffee stirrers and construction paper as part of the bridge kits that the kids could construct at the EXPO and/or bring home.  Other activities selected by the committee were a “walk on paper cups” and “build a paper tower.”

The WTS-Maine Engineering EXPO booth was a huge success, despite threats of yet another snowstorm.  The event drew over 1,500 attendees - a record breaking number.  The volunteers were kept very busy throughout the entire EXPO.   The positive feedback from teachers attending the show about the quality of our activities was an added bonus.

We have several upcoming programs on our calendar, including our May 6 Annual Meeting, with featured speaker David Bernhardt, Commissioner of the MaineDOT and a joint program with the ASCE Maine Chapter on May 22.  Please visit our Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/WTS.Maine?fref=ts or our website at: http://www.wtsinternational.org/maine/

We look forward to seeing you in May at our WTS – Maine Chapter events.
