WTS-Boston Summer Tour Event: Conley Terminal Dedicated Freight Corridor Project

03:30 PM - 06:30 PM Eastern Standard Time

Join WTS-Boston as we tour Massport's Conley Terminal Dedicated Freight Corridor project in South Boston.

Join WTS-Boston on July 21, 2016 as we kick off the annual summer tour event!  This year our tour will be held in the mid-afternoon and will showcase Massport's Conley Freight Terminal project on East 1st Street in South Boston. The tour will be followed by a networking social event at M.J. O'Connor's Irish Pub, where appetizers will be served.
The Conley Freight Terminal is owned and operated by Massport.  For many years, there has been significant planning efforts between Massport, state agencies, local elected officials, and the South Boston community to improve access to the terminal, make expansions, and also balance the needs of community residents.  The project is part of the Massport Capital Improvements Program and improvements include a dedicated freight corridor, expansion of the terminal, and the construction of an approximately 4.2-acre memorial park which will also serve as a noise and visual buffer for nearby community residents.
The tour group will be meeting at the Boston Convention and Exhibit Center at 3:30PM for registration and a pre-tour presentation.  At 4:00, a bus will provide transportation to the freight terminal for the tour.  The tour is expected to last approximately 1 hour.  At the conclusion of the tour, attendees will be transported back to the Convention Center by bus.  A networking social hour will be held at the adjacent M.J. O’Connor’s Irish Pub. Appetizers will be served. Cash bar.
Kevin McWeeney of Massport will be the tour guide.  He will be discussing the history, challenges, and design of the project, while showcasing some of its impressive elements currently under construction. The project is intended to take existing truck traffic off of East First Street in South Boston and expand the existing capacity of the terminal itself.  The tour will showcase the corridor and bridge construction, terminal expansion, proposed linear park, neighborhood improvements, and homeland security technology.
The tour will include walking as well as bus transportation.  We recommend you do not wear your nicest pair of shoes during the tour, and we hope to see you there!
