“Can Cars That Talk To Each Other Save Lives?”

Guest Speakers
Emily Nodine
USDOT Volpe Center, Mechanical Engineer in the Advanced Transportation Technology Division

Kevin Gay
USDOT Volpe Center, Operations Research Analyst from the Technology Innovation and Policy Division

The Connected Vehicle Safety Pilot Program is a multi-modal effort co-led by the Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA) Intelligent Transportation Systems Joint Program Office and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.  This program is the largest field test of automotive safety applications ever conducted.  It will determine the effectiveness of connected vehicle safety applications at reducing motor vehicle crashes and could significantly transform automotive safety.

Mr. Gay, who supports the USDOT in managing the Connected Vehicle Safety Pilot Program, will provide an overview of the technology and the field test that is currently taking place in Ann Arbor, MI.  Ms. Nodine will present the evaluation of the data that is being collected during that field test, which will address safety benefits, driver acceptance, and system capability of the technology.  The results of the evaluation will be used to support the USDOT in determining the future of connected vehicle technology in this country.
