Join us as we hear from MassDOT Highway Administrator Thomas J. Tinlin as he shares his outlook for the MassDOT Highway Division in 2016 and beyond. Administrator Tinlin will focus on how innovative technology is being deployed within the MassDOT organization to enhance safety and customer service for the traveling public. Bringing to the table his experience in both state and city government, he will share how MassDOT is tackling our 21st century transportation challenges.

Thomas J. TinlinHighway Administrator

Massachusetts Department of Transportation

Thomas J. Tinlin was appointed Highway Administrator of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation on September 9, 2015 after serving for six months as Acting Highway Administrator.  The Administrator, under the direction of the Governor and the Secretary/CEO, determines, directs and implements transportation policy for the Highway Division.  As Administrator, Tinlin oversees close to 3,000 employees and directs a multi-billion dollar budget. 

In his previous position as Chief of Operations and Maintenance at MassDOT, Tinlin was responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations.  As Chief of Operations, he was also responsible for overseeing the Highway Assistance Program, a roving vehicle patrol that assists over 30,000 distressed motorists annually.  Also notable was the former Chief’s role in overseeing the Highway Operations Center in South Boston, MassDOT’s statewide traffic management center responsible for coordinating incident response and security management on over 3,000 miles of roadway including one of the most complex tunnel systems in the world.

Before coming to MassDOT, Tinlin served as Commissioner of the Boston Transportation Department (BTD).  Tinlin has directed and implemented numerous high-profile transportation plans for the City of Boston, including the Democratic National Convention, the World Series, and the Boston Bruins Stanley Cup Parade.  Tinlin represents MassDOT on a number of AASHTO sub-committees and is a member of the Massachusetts Area Planning Council.Thomas J.
