WTS-Boston's November luncheon will focus on the nexus of transportation and social equity, featuring Karilyn Crockett, Lecturer in Public Policy & Urban Planning in MIT's Department of Urban Studies & Planning with guest Ann Hershfang, President of America Walks and WalkBoston. In 2018 Professor Crockett's book "People before Highways: Boston Activists, Urban Planners, and a New Movement for City Making" (University of Massachusetts press) was published, where she interviewed many local luminaries including Ms. Hershfang.
Professor Karilyn Crockett holds a PhD from the American Studies program at Yale University, a Master of Science in Geography from the London School of Economics, and a Master of Arts and Religion from Yale Divinity School. She recently concluded four years of service with the Mayor's Office of Economic Development as the Director of Economic Policy & Research and the Director of Small Business Development for the City of Boston. Karilyn is currently a Lecturer in Public Policy & Urban Planning in MIT's Department of Urban Studies & Planning. Her career mission is to continue to work at the nexus of education, economic development and urban revitalization.
Ann Hershfang has been President of America Walks, a national coalition of 60+ pedestrian groups and of WalkBoston, a metropolitan-area pedestrian advocacy group founded in 1990, the nation’s first and currently serves on WalkBoston’s board.  She chaired the TRB's Committee on Pedestrians (1997-2003) and served as Section Chair (2003-2008). She has been President of WTS-International and a National Board Member of the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy.  In 1988-89, she held a Loeb Fellowship at the Graduate School of Design, Harvard University.    In 1998, WTS-Boston named its annual Graduate Scholarship in her honor and in 1999, she was chosen "Woman of the Year" by WTS-International and WTS-Boston.  For the past 50 years, Ann has been deeply involved in community matters in her neighborhood particularly in transportation issues.
