Advancing Women in Transportation

The Outreach Committee participates in, plans and delivers Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) activities that strive to educate the next generation of female transportation professionals in the Boston area through a lasting Transportation YOU program.

Transportation YOU is a hands-on, interactive, mentoring program that offers young girls ages 13-18 an introduction to a wide variety of transportation careers. Through the program, chapters work to make a difference in the lives of young girls by offering programs and activities that will spark their interest in all modes of transportation and encourage them to take courses in math, science, and technology, which are the stepping stones to exciting careers that can change the face of the transportation industry.

The Boston Chapter’s Outreach Committee participates in, develops and supports a year-long program of STEM events for girls in grades K-12. The goal is to use the amazing network of WTS-Boston members to aid in educating girls and young women about the collegiate and career opportunities available to them in STEM, particularly transportation, fields. The many students who participate in these activities during their primary school years will even have an opportunity to apply to participate in national WTS Transportation YOU events.

●     After school activities;

●     Speed mentoring;

●     Tours of local research labs; and

●     Exhibitor booths at science fairs.

For upcoming Outreach events see the chapter calendar or contact the committee co-chairs.

Special Events

Boston Summit

The 2017 program will culminate in a Transportation YOU Boston Summit in November. This event will allow the chapter to provide up to 50 girls in grades 8-10 with an understanding of basic transportation concepts and connect them to resources for potentially planning an education or career in fields related to transportation.

Contact the co-chairs if you are interested in providing support or volunteering at the summit.

DC Summit

Transportation YOU’s flagship conference is an opportunity for select Transportation YOU participants from across the country and their mentors to gather at a DC Youth Summit.

The Boston Chapter sent a student-mentor pair in 2016 to attend tours, meet with White House administrators, and consider challenges and breakout sessions.
