Calling All Volunteers!

volunteer

WTS Boston Outreach committee is excited to be partnering with three different schools this year in an effort to expand our local Transportation YOU program. For a successful program, we need lots of volunteers to help plan events, brainstorm ideas for activities, and volunteer at the events. If you are interested in helping with any of the following events, please email Ali Love (Alison.love@stvinc.com) or Katie Choe (Katie.choe@boston.gov).

On Tuesday, November 10th, we will be holding an Engineering Career Forum panel discussion at Newton Country Day School from 12:15-2pm. Our goal is to introduce the girls, grades 9-12, to a variety of STEM careers and provide insight into what we do and how we got where we are.  We are looking for volunteers to act as speakers and showcase a variety of careers on the panel. A student will act as moderator, asking questions from the students. We are especially interested in finding a panelist who works in environmental engineering to help round out the panel with careers that will resonate with the students. If you are interested in being a panelist, please let Ali or Katie know!

On Tuesday, December 15th, we will send a group of volunteers to the Parlin School in Everett to hold an after-school program for middle school students. This will be the first in a series of 5 events, which we will hold at each of the Everett public middle schools throughout the year. The event will be from 2:30 pm – 4:00 pm, and will most likely include three short hands-on activities for the students to rotate through. We are aiming to frame the visit around the central theme of constructing a large project, using the casinos in Everett as an example. We would like to run activities that discuss environmental clean-up, transportation, civil engineering challenges, etc. If you know of any resources to make activities with these themes a reality, please let us know! We are in the early planning stages of the activities and can use help with the specifics. If you would like to help with planning visits to Everett schools or are interested in volunteering for the first event on December 15th, please reach out to Ali or Katie.

Transportation YOU is a hands-on, interactive, mentoring program that offers young girls ages 13-18 an introduction to a wide variety of transportation careers. Through the program, WTS chapters work to make a difference in the lives of young girls by offering programs and activities that will spark their interest in all modes of transportation and encourage them to take courses in math, science, and technology, which are the stepping stones to exciting careers that can change the face of the transportation industry. Locally, WTS Boston has teamed up with a few Boston area schools and will have more programming with each school throughout the school year. Stay tuned for more opportunities to help with our outreach efforts.
