Member Spotlight - Sarah Deschaine

June 18, 2014 11:27 AM

TireFlipRebecca Heavey of Howard/Stein-Hudson recently had the pleasure of sitting down for lunch to learn more about fellow WTS-Boston member, Sarah Deschaine, E.I.T., LEED AP.  Sarah is a Civil Engineer with Parsons Brinckerhoff where she specializes in drainage and rail design.  Here are some highlights from their conversation:

What first spiked your interest in the Transportation field?

I first became interested in transportation around the age of 6. I lived in New Hampshire with my family, and my mom was studying at Suffolk Law. One time, my mom brought me with her and we rode the commuter rail from Haverhill into the city. Since that time, I’ve always loved trains!

If you could make one change to common infrastructure in the USA, what would you change?

I’d create more opportunities for public transit outside of Boston.  I was a pedestrian for about 12 years while I was a student at Northeastern and the few years after when I lived in Jamaica Plain and Brighton.  Last year I ended up moving to Stoneham, and I felt like I had no other choice but to purchase a car to get myself around – which is something I never needed before. It would be great if Public Transit was available further outside of Boston.

What advice would you give to a young woman just entering the industry?

I’d suggest that they seek out networking opportunities and use them to her advantage as much as possible. There’s so many other women in our industry who have the same interests – in college I was warned that the Transportation field was completely male dominated. But, I remember looking around my classroom and seeing so many other women there with me.  We’re out there, utilize us to get ahead!

Where can you be found most weekends?

Most weekends I can be found at the gym.  Right now, I’m really into strength training – and I’m also very interested in nutrition. In April, I will be taking classes on how to properly fuel your body to achieve the maximum effect of my strength training. If I’m not at the gym, I’ll be at the pub watching English soccer.  I’m actually the Membership Director for the Boston Liverpool Supporters Club – LFC Boston!  And, when not at the gym or the pub, I’m visiting my eleven-month-old nephew, Theodore. I’m working on securing my title as ‘Favorite Aunt.’

If you could travel to any country, where would you go?

I would travel to England, France, and New Zealand.  England is on the top of my list, as I have a small obsession with Doctor Who and English soccer.

Tell us your hidden talent.

Fixing things!  If anything is broken, I can figure out how to fix it. My coffee pot broke a few weeks ago, and I took it apart piece by piece and figured out how to fix it. Also, I’m very strong from my strength training. I can flip a 425lb tire!
