2017 WTS International Chapter Leadership Training

Written by Rebecca Williamson, P.E., Jacobs Engineering Group Inc.

Three of WTS-Boston Leadership, Rebecca Williamson, WTS-Boston President from Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. (Jacobs), Kristine Gorman, WTS-Boston Secretary from Jacobs and Colleen Moore, WTS-Boston 2019 WTS International Conference Committee Co-Chair from City Point Partners attended WTS International Chapter Leadership Training in Las Vegas, NV on November 16th and 17th.  There were just under 100 chapter leaders from across the country in attendance at the training.

During the training, WTS-Boston Leadership attended general sessions on topics related to the WTS Foundation Diversity, Scholarships, Membership Recruitment and Retention and Mentoring.  There were two Chapter Leader Roundtables – one tied to the WTS Strategic Priorities of Membership, Diversity and Inclusion, Marketing and Branding and one tied to WTS Strategic Priorities of Governance, Planning and Culture/Partnerships & Collaboration.  On the afternoon of Thursday November 16th, I participated on a panel related to Chapter Finances and Chapter Tax Filing. The WTS Nevada Chapter hosted an Opening Reception poolside on the evening of November 16th.

The WTS-Boston Leadership in attendance agreed that the most beneficial sessions of the training program were the roundtable discussions.  The sessions gave leaders from various chapters around the country the opportunity to discuss chapter operations and share ideas related to membership growth, diversity, leadership roles and succession, fundraising, and chapter events.  The interaction allowed attendees to get to know one other and their chapters, while networking and creating an open dialogue between chapter leaders.

Although the Leadership representing the Boston chapter at training spent most of our time learning, networking, and engaging with other chapter leaders, we also had the opportunity for sightseeing and fun in Las Vegas.

WTS provides tremendous opportunities and friendships to all women in transportation and Chapter Leadership Training allowed the attendees to take full advantage of that.  It certainly allowed WTS-Boston chapter leaders to spend time getting to know each other, as well as network with transportation professionals from across the country.  The knowledge gained and connections made at Chapter Leadership Training will benefit the Boston Chapter as it moves into its fourth decade, while the memories and friendships made during our time in Las Vegas will certainly last a lifetime.
