Honoring Ms. Anna Barry – 2014 Annual Leadership Forum

May 12, 2014 10:18 AM

The 18th Annual Leadership Forum was held on April 3rd at the Courtyard Boston Downtown hotel.  This year’s breakfast gathered nearly 150 WTS-Boston sponsors, members and esteemed transportation officials to honor Ms. Anna Barry, Deputy Commissioner for the Connecticut Department of Transportation.  Ms. Barry is best known in the Boston transportation community for her many contributions in over 35 years of leadership at the MBTA.

Before speaking about her career in the public sector, Anna was introduced by long-time colleague Barbara Boylan who worked with Anna as former Director of Design at the MBTA.  In her opening remarks, Barbara provided insight to the admiration that others working with her felt for Anna as a leader, remarking that “everyone wanted to be in Anna’s group.”   On a more personal level, Barbara commented that Anna has her own style with an ever-present sense of humor. She noted that Anna also makes time for promoting the Arts and is a skilled golfer who has “rearranged many a cheesy golf course” in Massachusetts.

During her tenure with the MBTA, Anna Barry worked in several management positions, including Senior Director of Vehicle Engineering, Director of Railroad Operations, and Director of Subway Operations - managing the nation’s oldest subway system.  In her enlightening and humor-filled remarks, Anna discussed her many roles at the T and how she tackled the challenges of each position.  With each new position or assignment, she gave tribute to her managers and mentors, many of them in attendance, who pushed, inspired and helped her throughout her career.

Now at the Connecticut DOT, Anna is focused on helping to improve and expand Connecticut’s intermodal system, and she is embracing this new challenge with the same vigor and spirit that made her a successful leader in Massachusetts.
