Scholarships

For the 2009/2010 school year, the WTS Puget Sound Chapter is offering three scholarships for a total of $12,000.  Complete applications must be submitted by 5:00 pm November 23, 2009 (no postmarks). WTS will not be responsible for the completeness of the application if materials are received separately.

Sharon D. Banks Memorial Undergraduate Scholarship

The scholarship honors Sharon D. Banks, chief executive officer of AC Transit in Alameda-Contra Costa County, California. As CEO of most of the 1990’s, Sharon led the agency in a pioneering effort to introduce cultural and organizational changes aimed at motivating the public transit work force. She was a member of the WTS Advisory Board and received the WTS San Francisco Chapter Women and Employer of the Year awards. The Puget Sound Chapter Sharon D. Banks Memorial Undergraduate Scholarship is in the amount of $4,000 and will be awarded early in 2010.

 

The minimum criteria for selection are as follows:

- Open to women
- Minimum GPA of 3.0
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program in a transportation-related field, such as transportation engineering, planning, finance or logistics.
- Plans to pursue a career in a transportation-related field.
- Proof of enrollment is required.

 

The application of the recipient of the WTS Puget Sound Chapter Sharon D. Banks Memorial Undergraduate Scholarship will be forwarded to WTS International to be considered for the International $3,000 Sharon D. Banks Memorial Undergraduate Scholarship.

Helene M. Overly Memorial Graduate Scholarship

 

The Helene M. Overly Memorial Scholarship was established in 1981 by the Women's Transportation Seminar (WTS) to encourage women to pursue career paths in transportation. The scholarship is awarded to women pursuing graduate studies in transportation or a related field.

 

In memory of Helene M. Overly, the first Executive Secretary of WTS, the Board of Directors voted to name the annual WTS graduate scholarship, the Helene M. Overly Memorial Scholarship, to honor Helene for her dedicated service to WTS. Helene became a WTS member in 1981. She brought with her 15 years of experience in public service, tremendous organizational abilities, and a spirit of determination that helped WTS nearly double its membership in two years. The local WTS Puget Sound Chapter Helene M. Overly Memorial Scholarship is in the amount of $4,000 and will be awarded early in 2010.

 

The minimum criteria for selection are as follows:

 

- Open to women.
- GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Pursuing an education in transportation or transportation-related field (such as transportation engineering, planning, finance or logistics) in an graduate degree program.
- Planning to pursue a career in transportation or a transportation-related field.
- Be a Washington State resident, studying at a college in Washington State, or have an internship in Washington State.

 

The application of the recipient of the WTS Puget Sound Chapter Helene M. Overly Memorial Graduate Scholarship will be forwarded to the national WTS chapter to be considered for the International $6,000 Helene M. Overly Memorial Graduate Scholarship. The Graduate Scholarship is competitive and is based on the applicant's specific transportation involvement and goals, job skills, and academic record. Minority candidates are encouraged to apply. Financial need is not a primary criterion. The WTS Puget Sound Chapter may require a personal interview as a part of the evaluation process.

 

Helene M. Overly Memorial Graduate Scholarship


Shawna Mulhall Memorial Scholarship

 

In memory of Shawna Mulhall, this scholarship provides need based assistance to students in honor of Shawna’s dedicated service to WTS and the transportation industry. Shawna valued: mentoring - believing we are responsible for each other; generosity and giving with your heart; adventure and trying new things; contributing value and striving for excellence; really listening; and living a full life with dedication to family, community, arts, expression, and nature.

 

This scholarship is a memorial scholarship sponsored by the Puget Sound Chapter Board. The memorial scholarship name is revised periodically to honor a lost member. This scholarship also honors Grace Byrne.

 

The Scholarship is in the amount of $4,000. The minimum criteria for selection are as follows:

 

- Open to women
- GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program in a transportation-related field, such as transportation engineering, planning, finance or logistics
- Planning to pursue a career in a transportation-related field - Have a financial need-based reason for applying for the scholarship
- Be a Washington State Resident, studying at a college in Washington State, or have an internship in Washington State.
