John D. Rockefeller said, “Giving is not a duty, but a privilege.”  In November 2008, WTS-LA was privileged to give 11 outstanding students a record-breaking $37,000 in scholarships to help them reach their dreams.

Chapter president Cindy Sugimoto, an associate principal with Lea+Elliott, notes that the dinner is a wonderful reflection on the work and the mission of WTS-LA. “At WTS, we’re in the business of helping people move forward in their careers. But at this year’s Scholarship and Awards Dinner, people were moved emotionally. These wonderful young people spoke about their lives and the options we’ve opened up for them. This goes to the very heart of what we do.”

So poignant were the student speeches, members banded together and donated an additional $8,500 on the spot—monies that were added to the scholarships awarded that night. Additionally, $20,000 more was raised toward next year’s scholarships.

Ably emceed by Santa Monica councilmember and Metropolitan Transportation Authority director Pam O’Connor, the evening saw honors bestowed on Carolyn Flowers, chief operations officer for the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, who was named WTS-LA Woman of the Year. Kim Chan, a senior transportation planner for Jacobs Engineering, was named WTS-LA Member of the Year. Los Angeles World Airports received the Innovative Transportation Solutions Award for the LAX Flyaway Program. Board member and retired LAUSD administrator Emilie Gino was honored as Educator of the Year. And Rita Robinson, Los Angeles Department of Transportation general manager, accepted the Employer of the Year award on behalf of the City of Los Angeles, which was recognized for service excellence, for its outstanding record of affirmative action, and for supporting the continuing education of its employees.

“Building for the future isn’t just about bricks and mortar,” Sugimoto remarked. “It’s about people’s hopes and dreams. That’s really what transports us from where we are to where we want to be.”

Last year was good. According to this year’s scholarship co-chairs Karineh Gregorian (karinehg@gmail.com) and Melissa de la Pena (Melissa.delaPena@ch2m.com), 2009 is going to be better. Help make it that way. Donate your time or funds to advance the WTS-LA scholarship program.
