Transportation careers encompass such fields as planning, design, construction, operations, research, and consulting.  Employers include private industry firms in architecture, engineering, design, sciences, urban planning, economics, public administration, and research.  Local, state and federal agencies hires transportation professionals and private firms to perform all levels of work at all stages of project development and operation. 

 

Education for a career in transportation includes science, mathematics, communication, engineering, and an understanding of government.  Courses may include civil, electrical, mechanical and chemical engineering; environmental planning; traffic and railroad engineering; highway, airport, and urban designing and planning; computer science; statistics;  business management and public administration.

 

Positions as technicians, surveyors, programmers, installers, inspectors etc., may be obtained with training outside of four-year college programs.
